The Clothing Bank opened yesterday. It was particularly well-attended- which although we are glad that word is spreading and people are finding out what we can offer, in 21st Century Britain it is an absolute disgrace that people are in such dire need of help.
The gratitude of the people we help is heart-breaking. One young homeless man said “Thank you, thank you so much. You are doing such a good job” Not only were the volunteers humbled by his comments but also angered by them. I’m not sure who said it (possibly Gandhi) but there is a quote that says “You can judge a society by how they treat their weakest members.” The weakest members of our society are being badly let down at the moment
We received a good donation from a well-known and much frequented night club in Durham that had cleared out their lost property. If it is not claimed within six months they get rid of the items. They have promised any future lost property to the Clothing Bank. We are desperate for men’s clothes at the moment. If you have any men’s clothes you want to get rid of please consider giving them to the Clothing Bank.
Finally a huge thank you as always to the volunteers who give their time, to the people who donate clothes and to the people who have made cash donations. We could not do it without you. The next Clothing Bank will be on 24 March where we will be giving out Easter Eggs and having a raffle.
